First North American Biomeridian Test Node Deployed in Chesapeake Bay Watershed

The Biomeridian Team has been working hard to install automated observation nodes in North America. On September 19th, the first of many nodes that will make up a research network along the Chesapeake Bay Watershed was installed in North East Maryland with cooperation from NorthBay Education.

Pictured above, Oliver Lippy, a NorthBay Environmental Educator, checks the equipment the morning after installation to ensure that the programmed recording patterns on the bioacoustic microphone are functioning correctly. This preliminary node is set at the northern extremities of the Chesapeake Bay, next to the Susquehanna Flats. It is located in an important flyway for migratory birds that travel down the Elk Neck Peninsula on their southbound routes.

Nepalese biomeridian partners, Barun Bachaon, nominated for 2018 UIAA Mountain Protection Award

Barun Bachaon, or “Save the Barun”, is the local coordinating committee for the biomeridian in the Barun Valley of Nepal. They are currently among the 18 finalists selected for the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation’s prestigious Mountain Protection Award.

 The three-way partnership between local community organizations, Future Generations University, and the Nepalese government will integrate data gathered from the biomeridian with a holistic approach to community development and conservation. First field report from Nepal biomeridian pilot project

Future Generations University in collaboration with the East Foundation released their first report on the biomeridian feasibility study being conducted in Nepal.

Highlights include:

  • Experimental design and data collection methodology
  • Technology and equipment used
  • Community survey and socio-economic study of the region
  • Plant species identified at monitoring sites, and species of regional ethno-botanical importance
  • Maps of the monitoring sites and surrounding watershed
